Cub Scouts Army Visit 22 Apr 2008

April 18th, 2008

This coming Tuesday, 22 April, I have organised a visit to the Gallipoli barracks, Enoggera. There we will be visiting the 2/14 light horse regiment museum. The unit will also display an ASLAV (armoured personnel carrier) for the cubs to crawl over and an active soldier to speak with the cubs.

We will meet at the den at 6:20, to leave promptly at 6:30.

We will arrive back at the den at 8:00 pm.

Please dress in full uniform, neat and tidy, with scarf.

The soldiers suggest that we minimise the number of vehicles, so I’ll phone a few parents to transport. Those parents will stay for the night and transport back to the den.

No cost.

A few other items coming up:

Thursday 24 April (yes, two nights in one week!). Sleepover at the den, and then Anzac day march on Friday morning. I’ll have a note next week, but please reply to this email to let me know if you are coming or not, so I can organise catering. The cost will be $10.

If the cubs attend both activities (museum & march), they earn the special badge “their service, our heritage”.

I am now using the group website, www.stjohnswoodscouts.org. You can read notices, see photos of cubs and the other sections.

A full term 2 note will come out as soon as I have time to write one.

Regards,

Alan Brake (Akela)

Cub Scouts Term 1 Action

April 6th, 2008

Coming up:

24 April Anzac Day sleepover and march - start 6 pm; finish about 10 am

6 May Mother’s night

13 - 15 June camp

A highlight of the term was our sleepover. For many cubs, it was their first sleepover at the den in March. First the cubs cooked dinner for themselves on fires they built and then we had some wide games in the park and then on Sunday, we participated in Clean up Australia day. After that, the Joeys joined us for an activity with the local SOWN (Save Our Waterways Now) coordinator, Dick Harding. Dick talked to the Cubs and Joeys and then we planted 100 trees, shrubs and grasses. After that we went for a bushwalk and observed where people had helped, and damaged, the environment. The cubs showed a very high standard of good behaviour - well done.

Other activities this term have included our District Cub swim carnival, a swim badge night, fire lighting and toasting marshmallows, knots and lots of games. Thanks to the Scouts who have come down to participate in our evening programs.
