VenMX 2008

Monday, April 21st, 2008

After the great success of our Venturers at last year’s VenMX, claiming the winning trophy for the first time in many years, it is time again for the Venturers to rally for the most challenging competition hike of the year.

Carrying on with the tradition of the Rover Crew, our current ‘Saints,’ Emile, Owen and Matt, are joining in with this year’s, assisting in the running of Checkpoints.

If you would like to take part in this very worthwhile activity check out the VenMX site.

Roventure 2008

Get ready for Roventure 2008!

It’s that time of year again when Rover Crew’s from across South-East Queensland decide that their Venturer Unit’s aren’t so smelly and invite them to be their guests at the one and only Rover/Venturer activity of Roventure.

This year it’s actually being called ‘RowVenture’ as the camp is themed around the famous words of our founder BP in saying that you should “row your own canoe.” Bearing this in mind water activities, pirate discos and canoing are aplenty this year with fun applied liberally across the whole weekend.

If you are interested, which you naturally all would be considering how much fun Hamish had last year when The Gap Rovers took him along, then have a read of the flyer and get your folks to sign off on the Application Form both of which can be found on the Queensland Rovers site, and don’t forget to bring them along on Friday night with a crisp $50 note and Bob’s your uncle and Fanny’s your aunt. (For your information Emile will be playing the part of Bob for the weekend, Owen will be playing the part of Fanny, Bill will be the narrator and I will continue to cast whosoever else into appropriate roles at mine own discretion).

For the sake of keeping count of numbers (in the fashion of three preceding two, two preceding one, etc.) if a weekend of exuberant, unmitigated, overflowing, gushing, rapturous, unashamed, unmasked f-u-n gets you excited then send the Rover Crew an email immediately expressing your primitive desire to have fun! Our email address is… rovers@stjohnswoodscouts.org

This is what f-u-n looked like at Roventure 2007..!

Scouting Game – The Camo Man

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Necessary materials:
• Full Army camouflage gear ( top and trousers )
• 2 x GPS unit
• 2 x mobile phone
• Scout whistle

There are two groups in this game – the main scouting group, comprising of youth members, and an older Rover (over 18) or two.

Both teams have a GPS unit and a mobile phone. The aim of the game is for the Camouflaged man to walk around the suburb and stay hidden and for the scouting party to find him.

Every five minutes, the camouflaged man must sms his current location (minutes and seconds, not hours) to the scouting party. When he has transmitted this, they know exactly where he is and he must move out of the area as soon as possible.

The scouting party can opt to spread out over a large area in groups of four to aid in searching. Once the camouflaged man has been found, he will blow his whistle and gather the group together.

They can then decide whether to finish the game or try again. If they want to restart the game, they must give him a seven minute head start. He will send them an sms with co-ordinates when they are free to search.

For more information about the Crew’s meeting times and activities have a look at our Calendar.

Banana Bash ‘08

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Two members (and our RA) of the St John’s Wood Rover Crew recently attended the Banana Bash 2008, a get-together of many of Brisbane’s Rover Crews to pit their bash cars against each other in a number of races and challenges. At the moment our vehicle is not in a sufficient state to be raced, however we have recieved offers for bash-worthy vehicles.

We witnessed a crash of epic proportions, when Sunnybank’s vehicle (the red one shown below after the accident) fishtailed and slammed into a tree stump. Their rear (tubeless) wheel was pushed out of its rim, and they had to do a quick pit stop to get back to the finish line. For full gallery of images, visit the Banana Bash ‘08 Album.
